■ 日 照 : 日向～やや半日陰
■ 用 途 : 庭木 寄せ植え 大鉢仕立て

本種は葉が細く、小型の選抜種で、小さいヤシのようなエキゾチックな雰囲気もあり、近代的な植栽にも似合う
周年常緑で秋冬の黄花と春の実も楽しめる
日向～半日陰まで広く利用でき、鉢植えにも向く

マホニアは別名ヒイラギナンテン。縁起の良い「魔除けの木」とされて、庭の一角に植える風習があります。
本種 ‘青流’ (セイリュウ) はヒイラギナンテンの細葉タイプ「コンフューサ」の改良種で、さらに葉が細く、樹形もコンパクトになった扱いやすい品種です。
葉が柔らかく、縁の鋸歯も滑らかなので、触れても痛くない点も優秀です。
日本で古くから親しまれてきたヒイラギナンテン コンフューサは、国内の気候に合っており、とても丈夫で放任でも難なく育ちます。
よく公園で見かけたり、と以前は和風なイメージがありましたが、よくみると小さいヤシのような姿をしておりお洒落さがあります。
近年は、近代的な建築の植栽や、エキゾチックな雰囲気など、時代の先端的な植栽にも多用されるようになってきました。
周年常緑で緑が絶えず、姿の美しさと、放任で良いローメンテナンスさが、改めて評価されているのではないでしょうか。
常に綺麗にしておきたい玄関まわりの植栽や、草花との混植に、鉢で飾ってみても風合いが良いものです。
また、耐陰性があるためシェードガーデンや、木の株元の空いた場所などにもお使いいただけます。
◆生育の様子と剪定方法
花の少ない季節の秋冬に黄色い花を咲かせ、春には紺色の実も付くので、葉姿以外にも観賞価値があります。
耐暑性は強く、猛暑地でも問題ありません。耐寒性は少し弱いので強い霜が降りる寒冷地では鉢植え、取り込んで越冬が無難です。（植栽用としては暖地向きで、関東平野部が基準です。）
もともと、高さはあまり伸びない低木で、さらに小型の改良種のため、剪定はほとんど必要ありません。年数が経過して、背が高くなったり、姿が乱れたときは、花後に高い幹を選んで株元付近から短く切り戻しを行うと、再び新しい枝が吹いて姿良くまとまります。
